Stunning GAF Timberline HDZ in Slate

One of the best parts of serving the Puget Sound area is meeting amazing families throughout the region — and this recent project in Freeland on Whidbey Island was truly one to remember.

We first met the Hart family at the Evergreen Fall Home Show, where they mentioned needing help with a roof replacement on their beautiful barn. Their barn still had old cedar shake, and they were looking for a long-lasting, low-maintenance upgrade that would protect the structure for years to come.

They found exactly what they needed with Team Roofing NW.

Removing Old Cedar Shake & Rebuilding the Decking



Cedar shake roofing has its charm, but when it comes time for replacement, it requires a full rebuild. Because cedar shakes are installed on spaced sheathing and not solid plywood, every cedar replacement must include:

• Full tear-off of the existing cedar material
• Removal of old battens and debris
• Installation of new plywood sheets over the entire roof deck
• Preparation for modern architectural shingles

That’s exactly what our team did here.

Once everything was stripped down, our crew rebuilt the entire deck with fresh plywood, giving the barn a solid foundation and bringing it up to today’s roofing standards.

GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles – A Beautiful Gray Finish

For the new roofing system, the Hart family chose GAF Timberline HDZ shingles in Gray, one of the most durable and wind-resistant shingles available today. These shingles are perfect for Whidbey Island’s coastal weather, offering:

• Long-lasting performance in rain and salt-air environments
• A clean, timeless look that complements the barn’s rustic red exterior

Installed by Jose’s crew, the barn roof — approximately 1,200 sq ft — was fully completed in one day.

“Seal the Deal” — Even the Chicken Coop Got a New Roof

One of our favorite parts of this project?
Mrs. Hart asked if we would also reroof the chicken coop to “seal the deal” and make the property match beautifully.

Of course we said yes — after all, no project is too small, and if the chickens need a dry, cozy home, we’re all in.

The coop turned out adorable, durable, and perfectly matched to the new barn roof.

A Trip to Remember – Stunning Views & Bald Eagles

The crew enjoyed a gorgeous ferry ride from Mukilteo to Clinton, and once the work was done, the Hart family invited everyone to walk up the hill behind the barn. From there, they watched bald eagles soaring over the water — a moment our team will never forget.

Great people, a beautiful setting, and a rewarding project… it doesn’t get much better.
